Dairy Innovation Day

May 6
Venue: Dairy farm of Ian and Ruth McGregor, Busselton WA
PCO: Esther Price
AV/Sound: Derek Peterson,Totally Sound, Bunbury

Now this was different! A dairy conference on a dairy farm! Makes perfect sense, of course, providing you have the perfect location. And this one was.

Karl Burgi with captive audience(and cow) demonstrating hoof care.

I’m not sure how many farmers and suppliers to the industry attended, but it was well over 120. The main plenary session was held in a marquee, which was very comfortable and worked very well. Two other breakout venues were a smaller marquee and an outdoor arena where cow comfort guru, Karl Burgi, had a full house as he demonstrated various aspects of hoof care.

Landmark provided a barbecue breakfast with Ken Wrigglesworth from Landmark in Margaret River leading a team who kept the trailer-mounted barbecue working flat out. Lunch was provided by a local group from a P&C and the whole day  – the 12th – worked beautifully.

The program also featured Agribusiness Consultant, Kerry Ryan, whose work is spread between Australia and New Zealand and who spoke on best practice for people management. We also met Craige McKenzie,a Kiwi farmer and innovator who is heavily involved in a number of farming research projects.

The day also featured a fairly comprehensive trade display with machinery, technology and  other agriculture services well represented.

Innovation was the theme of the event and that was evident through every aspect of the day’s activities.
